Poker superstars are all over the world in the modern period of life and because of that they have been able to capitalize on the recent poker boom that has taken place around the world in order to become even richer than they already were. However, the poker boom that has helped many of these superstars has also had a curious side-effect. That side-effect has been one of elevating people in the world today to poker superstar status that arguably should never have been in poker superstar status to begin with. The modern analysis of what makes a poker superstar has a lot more to do therefore with winning the right tournament at the right time than it does with anything else.
A good example of this would Chris Moneymaker, the man that many credit as being the person that started the poker boom. Moneymaker was able to parlay a handful of dollars at an online satellite tournament into a $2.5 million win at the World Series of Poker, something that really is no small feat. Moneymaker, for this outrageous and unlikely accomplishment, is a man that will always be remembered within the annals of poker history and indeed for being able to pull off the practically impossible, he certainly does deserve that type of consideration.
However, what has he done ever since winning the World Series of Poker Main Event in 2003? The answer to that question is that he has done very little. While he may win a tournament here or there, he certainly does not have the same abilities as the poker pros of the world and for that reason he has fallen to the wayside after his one big strike. In spite of that however, Moneymaker is still considered a poker superstar and likely will be considered one when the final history of his professional poker career is written.
However, one does not need to look at the poker boom world in order to find a similar example. Just one year earlier in 2002, the World Series of Poker Main Event was won by a man named Robert Varkonyi, who took home the $1 million prize as the first amateur poker player to win the tournament. Varkonyi is also someone that has had very little success in the poker world ever since his victory and once again is a person that probably never would have been considered a poker superstar had he not been lucky enough to win the World Series of Poker Main Event.
Overall, the poker superstar title is one that is now awarded to people that have a marketing advantage as well as a talent one and for that reason is not really the same title as it would have been just a decade previous to today.
